The book also traces the cultural frameworks of the skull, contextualising iconography of bands The Grateful Dead and Black Sabbath, Hells Angels and contemporary Goth subculture. The Book of Skulls celebrates the skull as one of our most enduring and beloved visual icons. The book features both iconic and unseen artwork by artists such as Damien Hirst, fashion and photography by Alexander McQueen and Hedi Slimane, and illustration by street heroes Dr Lakra and Wes Lang. Conceived as an exploratory visual essay, the book also provides contextual cultural frameworks tracing iconic moments for the skull such as bands The Grateful Dead and Black Sabbath, Hells Angels and contemporary Goth subculture.

The Book of Skulls was published in five language editions including English, French, Spanish, German, and Japanese, and has sold over 80,000 copies worldwide.
